Abstract

Health education of patients, as one important roles of nurses, can significantly enhance the achievement of both medical treatment and nursing when patients possess correct information with regard to their health condition. However, wrong recognition of their health condition may cause emotional complication as well as the retardation of nursing effect. Recently, a number of patients with heart disease tends to increase due to both the changes of dietary life and the complexity of the living environments of this country. Particularly since a number of coronary artery disease patients are tending upwards the necessity of information and education with respect to the coronary artery disease rises. This research is intended to provide the fundamental backgrounds in developing educational program that can help to assist the health education of the patients and to support the activity for the health of the patients Furthermore this study is designed to provide the basis of quality nursing that would satisfy the demand of the patients. First, this study investigates both the knowledge of the coronary artery disease patients on the diseases and the health activity adapted by the patients to improve the health condition. Based on the extent of health activity of the patients found after the health education, this research also develops the methodology in a way that both the effective and actual education of the patients can be applied to clinical treatment. The followings are the main purpose of this paper. (1) Investigating the knowledge of the patients on the disease (2) The health activity of the patients (3) The results of the health education This study collected the basic information of 54 patients established, according to the selection criteria, from the patients visiting or under hospital treatment of the university hospital located in Seoul April, 1, 1992 through April, 30, 1992. Rehe¡¯s educational estimation tool has been used as a research toll to estimate the degree of information on Coronary Artery Disease. Twenty-five numbers of questionary was modified from Rahe¡¯s tool. Questions on the degree of health was based on the "Educational request of Coronary Artery Diseases Patients" which has been used by K.J. Hwang and M.H. Moon and the tool that the researcher developed according to the literature review and the clinical experiences. Analyzed results are as follows : First, the general characteristic of the patients distribution ranges from 30th to 70th. Of the patients the 50th has the most distributed portion. The male patients was 62.9% and more than the 1,000,000 won of monthly income patients took 53.2%. It has been found that the middle or high income patients took more percentage than others. Second, the 51.9% of the patients had more than 19 correct informations, the 30,85 of them had 16-18 correct information and the 17.3% of them had 13-15 correct informations of the 25 questions on the Coronary Artery Disease. According to the results, it can be deduced that the most patients are good aware of their own disease. The analysis of relationship between general characteristics and knowledge of attendants shows remarkable gaps each other. Thirdly, attendants¡¯ health before they were educated were examined on the whole score of ten. High scores were given to regular hospital visit(9.340), taking medicine, and the avoidance of stimulating amusement and movie. This means that most attendants take good care of their health. But low scores are found in diet and routine life, such as low salt diet(4.809), limitation of food with sugar(5.640), and dealing with ordinance at ease. After they were educated, high scores were found in diet theraphy and routine life. Especially, high increase is in low salt diet(7.864) and limitation of food with sugar(8.353). The above research shows that the health awareness of attendants is low and could be increased by education. The education effect can be made well in normal life activities rather than medical activities. Therefore, systematic knowledge and information, which patients with coronary arteriosclerrosis do not know, are necessary to be given to them.
